Childhood Traits
Genkaku grew up one way, and turned out to have a personality that is complete contradictory to what he was as a child/adolescence. Growing up, Gen was a very kind, fun-loving boy. He had many friends who genuinely enjoyed Gen's company. Sure they were all poor, but they lived in an extremely safe community that placed education, safety, family, and sanctum above all else. No Gen was such a sweet, caring boy. Being an only child, you can imagine the amount of attention he got from his parents. They instilled values within Gen that he carries with him even after the drastic personality change. Such as respect, honesty, courtesy, compassion, friendship, and more. Many people that Gen know now, never knew Gen before the change, so he's labeled as a freak. An none compassionate weirdo who cares more about his sword mastery than other people. However, that could be farthest from the truth.

Common Traits
Even thought Gen himself is a very skilled fighter, and prides himself with his abilities, he is extremely none confrontational. He hates fighting, and only fights when he feels that it is absolutely necessary. Such situations he outlined in his mind, such as protecting Soul Society, which is the reason why he became a Shinigami. Another situation in which would cause Gen to bear arms is if he is threatened and it is absolutely imperative that he defend himself to live. Only in those circumstances, and maybe others that are somewhat similar will Gen find it necessary to fight.

Since he was a kid, Gen has always had that smile. But there is a major difference from the smile that existed as a child, and the smile he wears now. As a child, Gen's smile was warmth to his parents, friends, and even strangers that existed within his community. His smile was sort of like a signature of Gen. He just isn't himself without it.
When the personality change happened, the smile went with it. Now the coy smile that creeps and stays within the lips of Gen is more cynical. It's almost evil actually. It's almost as if Gen was trying to hold on to his childhood through the smile. But those who used to know him realize that he isn't, and may never be the same as he used to be.

Personality Change
Two traumatic events, and the study of a legendary Shinigami forever changed the young upstart Shinigami forever. He developed more of a sarcastic, dark humor that puts some people off and writes Gen off as weird. Even the way he looked was effected. His hair used to be tied back, but he cut it short and wore it slightly above his eyes. His hair also used to be black, until he dyed it silver with a purple tint. His eyes are now constantly closed. He can still see through a small opening, but it can't be noticed no matter what distance you are from Gen, which is extremely eerie to say the least. Gen is also prone to strange acts that have people, to put it bluntly, say "what the f*ck is with this guy?" A certain situation cannot be used as an example because it canted be defined by one thing, because you would be lead to believe that his strange antics would fit only in that box, when there is no limit to it.

Appearance:
Head/Face
Gen's hair(as mentioned above), used to be a gorgeous jet black that was tied to a knot that fell down his back. It was extremely smooth to the touch and he had compliments everyday on his looks. It almost became expected for Gen that he be complimented. However, after he changed, he cut it short, as he became easily agitated by it. He dyed it silver with a purple tint. It's unknown why he dyed his hair, even to Gen.
Gen's ears are unusually pointy, similar to a fox. It was one of his few appearance flaws, but he wasn't made fun of it much growing up, only in the Shinigami Academy did he become self-aware of it. His new hair helps take care of that problem however, so maybe that was why he cut it so short, but that cannot truly be determined.
Gen's lips always part into that sly, coy smile of his that only exalt that part of his personality that enjoys dark humor, and sarcastic jokes.
When he was younger, Gen's eyes weren't always shut like the way they are now. He had beautiful emerald eyes, that like his hair, he had several compliments on it. However, after he changed, his eyes were almost constantly shut, and it only opened in the most extreme life or death circumstances. When they do open, the emerald eyes only tell the tale of hurt, anger, pain, and disappointment.

Outfit
Like most Shinigami, Gen is forced to wear the standard all black robe uniform that is standard issue to all soul reapers. But for Gen, he made slight modifications, and the way he wear it along with the position of his zanpaktou is....creative, to say the least. First off, the left sleeve has been ripped off completely. Revealing Gen's shoulder along with the rest of his arm and hand. The back of the robe as a purple Kanji on it that reads "Pain" and it looks like the work of a spray paint artist who did an exceptional job. The way Gen wears the robe is awkward indeed. His zanpaktou stretches across his right hip in a slight diagonal direction, and his right hand is never through the right sleeve, instead it rests within the opening that reveals his chest, in a more slight diagonal from his zanpaktou, giving him the chance to have an extremely easy, fast, and smooth draw when battle is initiated.

History/Background:
Life in Rukongai District 87
Gen was introduced to the world on a full moon, an anomaly perhaps. During Gen's early childhood development, he was extremely kind, and he even though he was so young he always wanted to help around the house. During these years, his parents instilled within Gen core values that he would hold on before, and after he changed.

No matter which Rukon District you were in, you heard tales of the Shinigami and their exploits. They were heroes beyond the walls of Seiretei, and the Captains were of legendary status. Kids were play with sticks and fight each other, mimicking the zanpaktous they carried in a feeble attempt to be just like them.

When Gen first started maturing, the way he saw things changed. Almost as if he bit the fruit from Adam and Eve's garden, he started to realize what life was like around him. He first realized how poor he, and everyone else were. Second, he realized that his mother was addicted to cocaine. Lastly, he realized his father was a drunk. These circumstances may be strange and unrelated since things seemed to hold together for so long, but that was until one faithful day.

Traumatic Event 1
While Gen was sleeping in his bed one night, he awoke to some strange noises. He soon was able to depict the strange noises as arguing from the neighbor's house so he tried to ignore it. However, it started to get louder, and louder, until Gen finally realized it was his father and mother. He quickly rushed to the other room to witness the argument. It was about money and Gen's future. Gen's father became enraged and smacked his wife, who fell on the floor. Gen screamed as he rushed in the room to help his mother up. Gen grabbed a knife and pointed it at his father. His eyes were filled with hate and fear at the same time. Gen's father pulled out a pocket knife and chuckled at his son.

"Why so serious?" He asked.

As he father went in Gen effectively stabbed him in the heart, killing him instantly. His mother awoke to see her husband lying in his own pool of blood, and the blood soaked knife which help in Gen's hands. Soon, some Shinigami scouts who were called in my Gen's neighbor rushed in the house. They took Gen away from his mother and took him to Seiretei, where he would be on trial.

Seiretei
Gen was put on trial, and he was eventually acquitted of the murder charges, but many people believed Gen to have done it. While he was staying at Seiretei, Gen found it the perfect opportunity to join the Shinigami Academy. When Gen joined, many students were afraid of him, but there was one girl who was the first to speak with him. Her name was Name. She had flowing yellow curly hair, was slightly taller than Gen, and had amazing features. She was a kind women who genuinely believed Gen was innocent, and he started to warm up to her. Gen caught on fast with swordsmanship, but he lagged behind in Kidou. It was the complete opposite for Name, who was a Kidou using prodigy but terrible at swordsmanship. They decided to work together to help further each others goals to graduate. Soon, the friendship paid off as they both graduated top of their class, having had the same exact score. They both received their zanpaktou as they left the Academy and joined separate divisions.

Traumatic Event 2: The Change
Gen and Name were brought before Central Chambers 42. They both had their zanpaktou in hand. The Chambers announced that Gen and Name both had the same zanpaktou, and that they must battle to the death since it was against regulation to have two Shinigami walk around with the same zanpaktou. Gen was extremely reluctant to battle Name, while Name herself felt as if she had no choice. Soon enough, Gen had to kill her in an extremely deadly battle. Gen only won because he used a high level kidou that even Name didn't know. After the battle, Gen became a shell of his former self, he was no longer the happy kid he used to be.

Aftermath
Gen started to reside within his house and studied the legendary shinigami known as Gin Ichimaru. Gen admired Ichimaru and cut his hair low. He even made modifications to his shinigami wear which was oddly similar to Gin. After the changes he made to himself, he was never truly able to come to terms with what he had done, yet, he still loyally serves Soul Society as a member of the 7th Division.
